The bioeconomy as a building block for the green and circular economy and for the European industrial renaissance

    The bioeconomy, the green economy and the circular economy
    A new approach to analyzing the bioeconomy in framework of a circular economy will be presented, differentiating between recycling complex biological structures (e.g. proteins and metabolites),  recycling simpler building blocks for new production of upgraded products (e.g. monomer sugars to be used as platform for upgraded products), or returning minerals/micronutrients back to the soil.

    Bio-economy R&I in the Mediterranean: challenges and opportunities
    Bio-economy in the Mediterranean is about food security !!. The renewed position of food security at recent G8 and G20 Summits is an acknowledgment that a more sophisticated coordination at global level is needed to meet the new challenge of food security, which is an upside-down scenario in comparison to what prevail in the last years of the 20th century, when food seemed relatively plentiful. It is certainly no coincidence that the “Arab Spring” was initially triggered as riots for bread, a social symbol as well as a staple food. Food security is a serious re-emerging problem in the Mediterranean, particularly in rural arid and semi-arid areas, the latter being the most vulnerable regions embedding multiple challenges and strong nexus with water, health, energy, demographic growth, climatic change and environmental threats.

    Bioeconomy in Poland – open opportunities
    The use of bioresources has a long tradition in Poland. But intensive and widespread efforts to raise awareness of the need for a more comprehensive approach to biological resource are necessary for the development of bioeconomy. One of the pillars of bioeconomy, the industrial biotechnology deals with, inter alia, biocatalysts/bioprocesses for industry and environment protection, biofuels, biodegradable biomaterials/biopolymers. The main addressees of the IB projects are food processing factories, biodiesel producers, chemical and cosmetic companies and biogas producing companies.

    The role of Climate-KIC in developing bioeconomy in Central Europe
    EIT Climate-KIC is the EU’s main climate innovation initiative. It is Europe’s largest public-private innovation partnership focused on mitigating and adapting to climate change. Among other activities the KIC funds projects that either identify innovation opportunities or translate those into self-sustaining outcomes. One of the projects funded by the Climate-KIC identifies gaps that need to be overcome in the context of taking the bioeconomy to the next stage – Biohorizons.
